EU:s latest. Are you ready?

From the 12th of August 2026 your packaging will be under scrutiny. Are you managing?

Managing PPWR

EU:s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) enters into force the 12th och August 2026. And it will put requirements on the packaging your are selling within the EU. But... why exactly? Well, the biggest factor is the fact that 40% of all plastic and 50% of all paper being used in the EU is going into packaging, and packaging is responsible för 36% of communal waste.

Requirements (12th of August 2026)

  1. You need a Declaration of Conformity for each type of packaging you have, which entails a technical file containing blueprints, designs, materials, and manufacturing methods for each packaging type. All documentation needs to be digitally available if someone asks for it.
  2. You need to take producer responsibility in every EU member state that you are selling your packaging in. In every country you need to: register as a producer, join a producer responsibility organisation (PRO), report the number of packages put on the market, and pay a fee to manage recycling.
  3. Distributors, including online marketplaces (i.e. Amazon), needs to make sure all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, otherwise they are not allowed to sell the product.

This is just the beginning, the entirety of PPWR will slowly be phased in until 2040.
