Currently there is a lot of AI angst floating around. People are worried about their jobs, how to contribute and to stay relevant. Sometimes even just what to do with all the chatGPT/Gemini/Claude/Perplexity tools of the world. Everyday there is a new tool, or a new release of a tool, or perhaps a new AI Doomsday article. Should we just check out and go for an early retirement? Or retrain to a human service work like barista, hair dresser, yoga teacher?
No, don't think so. But yes, you need to upgrade your skills to stay relevant if you are in tech. You need to be familiar with the new AI tools, what they are capable of and how to use them. Exactly like we once upon a time needed to learn how the internet worked, smart phones and fax machines. Perhaps the tech evolution is a bit faster this time, so you will need to dedicate time if not daily so at least weekly to stay up-to-date.
When you know your way around the new tools focus on the value you can deliver. And for me it is without doubt seeing the bigger picture, identify use cases, EXECUTE, and provide good input. The old tech wisdom of shit in, shit out is still true. AI is only as good as the prompt. It needs guidance. Someone who knows the objective, the full system, the storyline. Someone with a plan. You & AI could be the best thing ever. Finally, we can be just as adaptive and flexible as the complexity of our times require.
